Makeup Savvy! Part 3: Contouring

What’s the deal with contouring, anyway? What’s the point? Doesn’t it take a lot of time? Won’t it just make me look clownish? Don’t you have to be a makeup guru or hire the Kardashian’s glam squad to contour correctly?

These were my questions before beginning my research for this post. Learning to contour quite frankly seemed impossible. I just knew that if I tired I would muck it up and look ridiculous; so why try? I like to look as natural as possible and just assumed that contouring always meant you looked like you’re wearing a ton of makeup. But you know what they say about assuming… 😉

As it turns out, contouring can be as natural-looking as you want.  Basically, contouring can help make your face look slimmer, or can downplay features you don’t love, while highlighting features that you do love. It also makes your face look positively radiant! Done wrong, however, you can look pretty silly.

contouring-what-not-to-do
A dramatic, comedic example of bad contouring!

The point of Savvy Minerals makeup to is provide light weight, full coverage, all-day wear with a flawless finish. It helps your beauty shine through as opposed to some makeup that covers up your natural beauty altogether and makes you look like a totally different person. Savvy doesn’t have a wide range of products, like some makeup lines, but that is because you can use most Savvy products for more than one thing. For instance, Veil is a setting/finishing powder that gives you an “airbrushed” finish, but it can also be used as a highlighter, or can be used alone (without foundation) to make you look radiant without wearing anything else on your face.

“So how do I contour? I’m no makeup artist!”

Good news, you can be a total amateur, like me, and still get a great, contoured look!

Face Shape

The first step is knowing your face shape. Every face shape will need to be contoured differently to give you the right look.

This guide will help you determine your face shape and show you where to apply each product. If you can’t determine your face shape, just ask someone close to you. contouring-for-your-face-shape

Contouring Phases

There are three phases to contouring: contour, highlight, and blush.

Each phase uses a different Savvy Minerals product –
Contour: Bronzer (I wear Crowned All Over)
Highlight: Diamond Dust Veil
Blush (I wear I Do Believe You’re Blushin’)
– and each will go on a designated part of your face.

I have a rectangular face shape, so I will

  1. Apply bronzer to my jaw line, the hollows of my cheeks, and “corners” of my forehead.
  2. Highlight with Diamond Dust Veil in the center of my chin, upper lip, apples of my cheeks up towards my ears, center of forehead, and very top of my forehead.
  3. Apply blush to the apples of my cheeks overlapping with the bronzer and veil.

contouring-essentials

For me, contouring with bronzer makes my face look not as long and also accentuates my cheek bones, which creates a slimming effect. Highlighting with Diamond Dust Veil gives my face a luminous glow, while blush gives me healthy, youthful color.

To determine which shade of bronzer and blush you need, see Makeup Savvy! Part 2: Skin Tone to learn about your skin tone and which Savvy product will look best on you.

For a more dramatic look, choose a shade or two darker than you would normally wear – the darker bronzer & blush. Or you can even use a darker shade of foundation or one of the multi-taskers in place of bronzer in you do not like the slight shimmer that the bronzer has. If you use Diamond Dust Veil as your setting powder (as opposed to the Matte that I use which is great for people with oily skin), you can use one the light eyeshadows as a highlighter – choose Best Kept Secret, or Wanderlust (or you can use Diamond Dust as a highlighter and setting powder). There are so many options and it is so fun to play around with the different products until you get just the right look.

Blending

Now that you know what goes where, it is time to make everything look natural and smooth. If you don’t blend you can look really clownish and have harsh lines of color all over your face. To blend, apply a light layer of Matte Veil to your entire face, making sure you pay extra attention to the areas you’ve contoured. This will not erase your contouring, but will blur it together to help you achieve a natural, airbrushed look.

Makeup Savvy! Part 1: Why Savvy Minerals

Young Living unveiled some incredible new products at the 2018 Grand Convention last month, and I thrilled about the new additions to the Savvy Minerals makeup line! I am obsessed!

I’ve never really cared that much about makeup though. I’ve worn it since I was in the 6th grade (just blush and cover up as a kid, don’t worry!), but have never been super into it. It was exciting when I was little and would gaze up at my Mama while she carefully applied hers, and I anxiously awaited the day when I could wear it, too. That novelty wore off pretty quickly though. I always want to look nice, but as far as contouring, highlighting, all the trends, a million steps, spending hours playing with makeup to get the right look, yada yada,  I’ve never cared. “Go with whatever is going to be the quickest so I can get every minute of sleep possible” has always been my motto. Makeup has never excited me, it’s just been a necessary part of my morning routine. Until now!

The Savvy Minerals makeup line by Young Living is AMAZING and has me super jazzed!

Why did I choose Savvy?

The last year or so since going off the pill and figuring out how to support my hormones properly, I have really suffered with acne. Horrible, ugly, embarrassing acne. It was worse than it has ever been – far worse than it ever was during puberty. There were times I didn’t want to leave the house because of how ugly I felt. I needed makeup to cover it up, but my typical makeup seemed to irritate my skin, even the “good” expensive stuff I had started buying. Catch 22. Then, right on time, Young Living introduced Savvy! Total game changer! (I’d like to state that I’ve worked REALLY HARD to correct and heal my skin. I’m doing everything I can to support my hormones, being very diligent in my skin care regimen, using high-quality Savvy makeup, taking my YL vitamins & supplements, staying hydrated, etc., and my face has cleared up remarkably! The acne is about 90% cleared up and now I’m focusing on healing my skin and restoring my skin tone. *Bursts in to an off-key rendition of “I Feel Pretty” *)

I decided to try out Savvy Minerals because it is full of good things that are beneficial to your skin, and devoid of the harmful stuff found in most makeups that can actually irritate the skin and can cause acne. Plus it offers full, buildable coverage. Also, since I’m definitely going to be buying makeup anyway, it only makes sense to buy it from a company that gives me points that spend like cash for every dollar I spend – thank goodness for Essential Rewards!

Savvy Minerals is always formulated without¹

Talc
Bismuth
Parabens
Synthetic Fragrance
Phthalates

That’s right, this line is all na-tu-ral! It minimizes the appearance of pores, brightens the complexion, absorbs excess oils, provides lasting, all-day wear, is great for those with sensitive skin, is non-irritating, won’t clog pores, is gluten free, totally vegan and is never tested on animals.¹ Awesome stuff!

Harsh chemicals

Gluten
Parabens
Phthalates
Petroleum
Synthetic dyes & colors – in fact, it’s practically clear
BHA
Sodium Sulfate
Carcinogens

Basically, it is full of only beneficial, all natural ingredients and no harmful, artificial junk. Plus, this masque is formulated for all skin types¹!

It is recommended that you use this masque 3-4 times a week¹. Which would put you using one box a week. Four boxes a month. One box is $47.50 wholesale, and I don’t know about you, but I cannot spend $190 a month on face masques. So I found a little trick to make it stretch further!

When you take the sheet masque out of its pouch, look into the bottom of the pouch… see all that goo? That’s the good stuff! There is enough extra goo in there that you can do a goo masque (as opposed to a sheet masque) 2-3 more times, maybe even more if you stretch it. What I do is I put the pouch in a Ziploc bag to keep air from getting to it (I don’t know what would happen if it was exposed to air for too long; would it dry out? Evaporate? Get weird? No clue, but it seems safest to seal it back up as best I can), and pour out a quarter-sized amount into my palm, as needed. I rub the goo onto my face; let it dry, and rinse. So, day 1 I do a sheet masque, let my skin rest a day, and then use the goo. So I use the ART Beauty Masque/Goo every other day. Or at least I should. I’m trying to get better at it. This way you stretch the use of your masque and you don’t waste anything. You can use one box a month as opposed to four. You can even stretch it more by doing a two-day gap, or just using it once or twice a week. The goo will keep for a while, so make that puppy last!

You may think that a sheet masque isn’t important to your skin care regimen, but let me say that I LOVE it! I can tell a difference when I use it regularly versus when I don’t. Since it is a tad pricey for my budget, I like to buy it with my Essential Rewards points; getting this awesome facial for free is always nice!

I could write more and explain why I love this masque and what it does for my skin, but I’d rather show you so you get the full effect!

Now, go draw a bath, put something relaxing in your diffuser, put on a masque, and let your at-home spa night begin! Or put on your masque, pour a glass of wine, and watch the Bachelorette like I do. Don’t have these masques? You can get them here.
