Well, readers, it’s been a while since I’ve posted. Like, months. I haven’t lost my passion for essential oils, or Young Living products, but I’ve been struggling (and gotten out of the habit) with blogging. It’s a lot of work! I have a full-time “day job” and a life, and it’s hard to find the motivation to use my free time to blog (I know, I know, there’s an oil for that 😉 ). I’m trying to do better!
Today I want to talk about one of my favorite things; BATHS! I absolutely love taking a long, hot, relaxing bath! But what makes a bath awesome? What you add to the water, of course!
There are so many options!

How to choose?!
I like to mix and match! Below I’ll tell you the benefits of adding each of these to your bath, and give you a recipe to try out!
Epsom salt (chemical name: magnesium sulfate), named for the Epsom region of England. It has anti-inflammatory properties, making it great for relieving minor aches and pains. It is also full of magnesium (which promotes a better night’s sleep; among other things).
Historically, Epsom salt has been used to relieve many issues**, including:
- Itching caused by poison ivy
- Skin irritations and inflammation
- Sore feet & muscles
- Stiff joints
- Constipation (especially when added to a glass of drinking water)
For me, adding Epsom salt to my bath water makes the water feel softer, and makes it easier to relax.
Note: this is salt, so if you have a cut/open wound, you may experience discomfort if you submerge broken skin into the Epsom salt water. If you have never used Epsom salt before, consider testing it on a patch of skin first.
Himalayan Pink Salt² ³
I LOVE Himalayan Pink Salt! I cook with it, use it as a scrub, add it to my bath, plus I have two salt lamps! It is simply wonderful! Pink salt is known for being full of minerals such as magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, potassium, selenium, sodium, and zinc. These minerals are known to help fortify bones, skin, and connective tissues that may contribute to soreness. When you soak in anything, you absorb it into your skin, so taking a bath in pink salt, you are getting all of these essential minerals absorbed right into your blood stream!
In addition to providing you with necessary minerals, it also helps your body detox, as well as help to regulate your body’s pH balance (I find this to be especially true!)**.
Baking Soda 4
Baking soda is comprised of sodium and bicarbonate ions that help prevent bacterial growth, odors, and acidity. Baking soda can help soothe dry, itchy skin, making it great for many skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, poison ivy, oak or sumac, and chicken pox**. It promotes detoxification, especially when mixed with Epsom salt. It also helps makes the water feel “soft”.
Bath Bombs 5
Bath bombs are basically a mixture of baking soda, salt, citric acid, and cornstarch, along with synthetic dyes, synthetic fragrances, various extracts, and “other” ingredients.
Bath bombs are great (and fun to use) if you don’t want to mix your own salts & oils together. I love dropping one into the bath and watching it slowly disintegrate as it floats around the tub! HOWEVER, you need to be very picky about which ones you use. Remember, anything you put on your skin (or soak in), gets absorbed into your body, so use only products with the best, completely safe ingredients, and with no synthetic dyes or fragrances.
Young Living offers two truly amazing, relaxing, wonderful-smelling bath bomb options: Lavender, and Stress Away™.
They are phenomenal! They are made without colorants, synthetic preservatives, parabens, or animal-derived ingredients. The product description says, “Instead of artificial ingredients and harsh chemicals, we’ve made these vegan bath bombs with a mineral-rich formula and skin-loving ingredients such as coconut oil and sweet almond oil. That means they’re not only fun and relaxing-they also leave skin soft, smooth, and moisturized.” I haven’t tried the Stress Away ones, but I have used the Lavender Calming Bath Bombs, and they’re fantastic! They are pure white, smell wonderful, and make the water feel like silk!
Like bath bombs, most bubble baths are full of synthetic dyes and fragrances, and filled with even more harmful, synthetic chemicals, some that are known carcinogens. Obviously, each company has a different formula, but, as always, you want to steer clear of anything fake – even things that say “all natural” and “organic” can be bad for you. Arsenic can be organic – that does not make it safe to consume arsenic. So, read your labels!
As of now, YL does not offer a bubble bath, but you can find lots of recipes for safe, homemade bubble baths made out of Castile soap, vegetable glycerin, aloe vera juice, and essential oils! I haven’t made my own yet, so I don’t feel comfortable endorsing a recipe, but search Google or Pinterest and you’ll find tons of safe options!
Used by people for thousands of years for skin and body care, essential oils make a great addition to any bath! There are so many options, too! My favorites are
Peace and Calming™
Mostly, I just stare at my oil collection and grab any that stand out to me at that moment. Sometimes I’ll use up to 8 different oils! If you’re reading this, then you likely already know a bit about oils and why they can be beneficial, so I won’t go into all that. I will say, however, that each oil and oil blend has a whole host of uses and things that it can help with, so listen to your body and use oils that will help you achieve your bath goal: relaxation, better sleep, balance pH, aid in aches & pains, skin conditions, etc.
I take a fair amount of baths — like one a week (at least that’s the goal). I take one after my monthly chiropractor appointment, when I feel stressed or tense, when I want to sit and do nothing, when I feel particularly “extra”, when I’m sad, when I’m happy, when I’m cramping; any time, really! Baths are the beeeeest!
I started really loving baths about a year ago when I moved into my new apartment. I now have a tub with arm and back rests which makes baths so much more comfortable! For 26 years I only had standard tubs with nothing comfy going on, but now I feel so luxurious in my new tub! I go all out. I got an awesome tub-shelf-thing that goes across the tub and holds a book (or phone for watching Netflix), my oil-infused water, and even a special slot for a wine glass so it won’t slide around. I have a neck pillow. I have the Lantern Diffuser that has a flicker mode so it looks like a candle burning. They say to soak in a warm tub for 20-30 minutes, but I love it so much that I soak in my hot (not warm) tub until the water/I get cold (I think my record is about two hours…).
What I do is keep a 24 ounce-size mason jar & lid in my bathroom and I fill it completely with a mix of salts, baking soda, and oils. I keep a 1/3 Cup-size scoop in my Epsom salt bag, and I fill my jar parfait-style. I start with 1/3 cup Epsom salt, 4-6 drops essential oils, then a layer of baking soda. Put on the lid and shake, shake, shake. This helps the oils to be distributed more evenly. Then a layer of pink salt (not quite as much as Epsom), 4-6 drops oils, more baking soda. Lid; shake. Repeat layering process until full (leaving just enough room at the top to shake that final layer). Then, I let the sealed jar sit for at least 10 minutes. This allows the essential oils to really saturate the salts.
While the oils are infusing, I typically make a face mask to wear while bathing. I love the YL ART Beauty Masque – it’s divine! However, it is a bit pricey, so I only get it when I have extra ER points and want to splurge! But I find making masks at home to be equally beneficial (check out my next post to find some recipes!). Make sure you wash your face before applying a face mask in order to remove any makeup or excess oils.
After 10 minutes or so, fill your tub up and add your salt mixture. I use my legs to swirl the salts around so help them dissolve.
Slide into the tub, and soak your cares away! Stay in as long as you feel like!
The salts can sometimes leave a slight residue on the skin, so I always shower off after my bath so that any remaining salt is gone, and so I can exfoliate. I emerge feeling so relaxed and clean!
-Glass jar with air-tight lid Begin by scooping a layer of Epsom salts into your jar. I use a 1/3 cup measuring cup as my scoop. Add 4-6 drops essential oils to the jar, and follow with a layer of baking soda; about 1/8 cup. Tightly screw on the lid and shake the salt mixture together making sure to saturate the salt with oils (it’s easiest to tell this is happening when using a brightly colored oil blend such as Stress Away or Valor). Remove lid and add a layer of pink salt (the same amount as the Epsom salt you added previously), and repeat with essential oils, baking soda, lid, shake. Repeat this layering and shaking process until almost full (you want to leave just enough space at the top to shake the last layer). Once your jar is full, screw on lid and let the salt mixture sit for at least 10 minutes to allow the oils to really saturate the salts. Add the whole jar to a warm bath, and enjoy!
Katie Sue's Bath Salts
-Pure Epsom Salt (make sure you get plain, pure Epsom salt, not scented or with “essential oils” already added)
-Himalayan Pink Salt (you can get a 5-lb bag on Amazon for under $15)
-Young Living Essential Oils of your choice (however many you want; get whatever jumps out at you)
-Glass jar with air-tight lid
